Almost every country in South-East Asia is now embarked on Defense modernisation, making it one of the fastest-growing regions for defence spending in the world. ASEAN nations are increasingly spending on Defense, as an off-shoot of the region’s rapid economic development.
Military analysts at IHS Jane's report that South-East Asian countries increased defence spending by 13.5% last year, to $24.5 billion. And that figure is projected to rise to $40 billion by 2016.Thai defense expenditure is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 14.12% during the forecast period, making it one of the fastest growing defense markets in the world. Thai defense expenditure is being driven by modernization initiatives in addition to border disputes, and security threats. The country aims to increase defense expenditureas a percentage of GDP from 1.5% in 2011 to 1.8% in 2016. Defense equipment suppliers will therefore witness a surge in demand for advanced defense systems such as fighter aircraft, military helicopters, armored vehicles, surveillance equipment, warships and submarines.
